Second Fishing for a Cause tournament coming this Sunday at Smith Mountain Lake

SMITH MOUNTAIN LAKE, Va., April 30, 2019 – Dollar Energy Fund and Appalachian Power Company are hosting the second annual Fishing for a Cause tournament at Smith Mountain Lake on Sunday, May 5, 2019. It is made possible through a partnership of Appalachian, Conrad Brothers Marine and Bassquest SML.

Last year, the event at the lake brought in over 75 boats for a day of fishing, prizes and fun. The 2018 tournament event raised $20,150, including a match from Appalachian, to assist limited-income customers maintain or restore basic electric service through the company’s Neighbor to Neighbor Program in Virginia.

The 2018 tournament’s $5,000 grand prize winner was Archie Musgrove of Wirtz. The boat with the biggest catch won a $3,000 prize. The winning team was a father and son, Luke and Gary Nichols of Scruggs, with a total weight of 23.13 pounds. The top 10 angler entries also received cash prizes.

“This year we are hoping for much of the same fun on the lake and community benefit,” said Dwight Linkous Appalachian’s customer services coordinator. “We’ll have the same entry fee of $100 per boat, for up to two anglers. There will be cash prizes again for the greatest total weight (payout is one for every seven boats) as well as a raffle prize of $5,000 available to anyone who registers for the tournament– regardless of whether or not they catch a fish.”

Lunch will be served during weigh-ins and there will also be prizes for the kids. The event will again be held at Parkway Marina, 16918 Smith Mountain Lake Parkway. Registration begins at 6 a.m. and teams will start at 7 a.m. Weigh in starts at 3 p.m.

The fee is $100 per boat.

Jessica Gunjak is Dollar Energy’s fundraising director and is managing the activities. “We are currently looking for new anglers and sponsors for the event,” she said. “ All proceeds from the event are matched dollar for dollar by Appalachian Power and distributed in the community to help local residents maintain or restore basic utility services.”

“At Dollar Energy Fund we always encourage you to have fun while raising money for families and individuals who are on the path to self-sufficiency,” Gunjak added.
