KENTUCKY POWER SNOW STORM UPDATE: 8:00 P.M.

February 22, 2012

FRANKFORT, KYKentucky Power made good strides today in restoring power to customers affected by Sunday’s snow storm. At this time, more than 32,250 customers have had power restored, or about 95 percent of those who originally lost power. At the peak of outage cases, more than 34,100 customers lost power as heavy, wet snow accumulated over the company’s southeastern Kentucky service area. Approximately 1,875 customers remain without service. With the assistance of more than 740 additional restoration workers, the company is working as safely and quickly as possible to restore service to customers.

Restoration Notes

Company officials caution outage numbers can still change. The potential for thunderstorms over eastern Kentucky tomorrow afternoon may lead to additional outage cases, increasing the number of customers without power. Kentucky Power urges customers to prepare for that possibility by having on hand a family emergency kit that includes items such as flashlights, battery-powered radios, extra batteries, bottled water, blankets, non-perishable foods and other items that may be needed during extended power outages. Customers should report power outages to Kentucky Power at (800) 572-1113.

Downed power lines continue to be a concern and company officials caution eastern Kentucky residents to never approach downed power lines or wires of any type. No matter how harmless a downed wire may appear it should be considered energized and dangerous. Report all downed power lines to Kentucky Power at (800) 572-1113 or notify local emergency or law enforcement officials immediately. Never approach or touch anything that comes in contact with a downed power line.
