Tennessee retail rates changed for 2009

American Electric Power has served the Kingsport, Tenn., community by many names over the years, but our dedication to our customers remains constant. We’re known as AEP Appalachian Power now and our operations, including rates and tariffs, are governed by the Tennessee Regulatory Authority (TRA).

Electric service in the Kingsport area has been, and continues to be among the least expensive in the region. The most recent rate change was authorized in October 2012 when the TRA approved the pass-through of certain costs associated with a major storm recovery effort in 2009, resulting in an increase in overall rates of approximately 1 percent. As a result of the rate change, residential customers in Kingsport pay approximately $88.53 for 1,000 kilowatt-hours of electricity (based on an estimated November 2012 bill).

Another part of the Kingsport customer bill related to generating electricity is the fuel factor. These charges are directly tied to the costs of buying fuel to generate electricity. The fuel factor is adjusted monthly to keep pace with the volatile price of fuel, primarily coal. These costs do go up and down. Our company makes no profit on this portion of the bill.
