Chris Beam has been named president and chief operating officer of Appalachian Power, announced AEP Chairman, President & Chief Executive Officer Nick Akins. Beam, 47, is currently vice president of Projects, Controls & Construction for AEP. Charles Patton, 57, current Appalachian president and COO, has been promoted to executive vice president of External Affairs for AEP.

in several Virginia and West Virginia counties and cities have been selected to share $155,000 in economic development grants from Appalachian Power. The awards announced this week are part of Appalachian Power's efforts to promote economic growth in the company's service territory.

Appalachian Power has filed a request with the Virginia SCC seeking approval of an accelerated vegetation management program that has been shown in a pilot program to reduce the number of tree- and other vegetation-caused power outages. If approved, the proposal will enable Appalachian to accelerate its vegetation management operations and ultimately achieve a 4-year cycle of effectively clearing every distribution circuit in its Virginia service territory.

Almost 17,000 elementary students in West Virginia, Virginia and Tennessee were treated to a visit on Nov. 17 by an Appalachian Power employee who came to the school to read a book and donate that book to the school library.

Appalachian Power and affiliate AEP West Virginia Transmission Co. are proposing a $32 million project to strengthen the transmission grid in Jackson and Mason counties. The Leon-Ripley Transmission Rebuild Project includes rebuilding about 14 miles of transmission line, expanding one substation and upgrading a second substation.

Appalachian Power is joining forces with more than 20 gas and electric utility companies across the United States and Canada to protect customers from long-running scams. These utilities have designated November 16th as "Utilities United Against Scams Day."

As more than 300 Appalachian Power employees prepare to visit schools later this week for the company's annual Read to Me Day celebration, one thing will be different this year. Usually, the readers sport a new shirt with the Appalachian Power logo, given by the company in recognition of their volunteer effort. But this year, those readers decided to instead put that money toward donations to libraries in flood-damaged areas of the state.

Appalachian Power has announced plans to construct a new transmission and substation project serving the Wildwood Commerce Park at Galax. The 3-mile, 138-kilovolt project will begin when the first park customer is secured for the 273-acre site. Appalachian is partnering with the Blue Ridge Crossroads Economic Development Authority to increase business potential at the location.

The public access fishing pier at Appalachian Power's Marmet Hydroelectric Project will be closed to the public from Monday, Oct. 10 with plans to reopen by 4:00 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 28, while a contractor replaces handrails at the site. Weather or other unforeseen circumstances could revise schedules.

Appalachian Power has begun construction on a project that will bolster the local transmission system that powers the Charleston area. The Charleston Area Improvements Project is a $110 million investment that includes rebuilding about 5 miles of transmission line and building a new segment of transmission line, plus expanding three substations and building a new substation in the downtown area.

Appalachian Power and its affiliate, AEP West Virginia Transmission Co., are proposing a project that will strengthen southern West Virginia's electric grid. The $62 million Boone County Area Improvement Project includes rebuilding about 16 miles of transmission line, building a new substation and expanding an existing substation along the project route.

Appalachian Power leaders and employees today presented the American Red Cross and The Salvation Army a $102,178 donation dedicated to flood relief efforts in areas of West Virginia affected by floods earlier this summer. The donation comprises $52,178 in personal contributions from more than 400 employees across 11 states served by American Electric Power (AEP) and a matching gift of $50,000 from the AEP Foundation.

Appalachian Power, operator of the Smith Mountain Project in southwest Virginia, announced plans to aggressively attack an unusual buildup of water surface natural debris on Leesville Lake, the lower reservoir of the two-lake hydroelectric generating project. Plans include a cooperative effort with the Leesville Lake Association to immediately hire additional outside assistance. The lake has been beset since late 2015 and during recent heavy rainstorms with the inflow of debris.
Removal has been hampered by the loss of a mechanical skimmer craft.

Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power filed with the PSC of W.Va. for approval of the long-term purchase of 120 MW of new wind generation. The 20-year purchased power agreement will increase the companies' total wind generation to 495 MW. The project will be built and operated by NextEra in Indiana.

The Byllesby Portage and public boat ramp on New River has been closed to allow the safe completion of construction work at the Byllesby Dam. Appalachian Power will replace dam flashboards with new mechanical gates at the hydroelectric plant site. Work should take until mid-October.

A multi-million dollar investment by Appalachian Power to inspect and maintain 60,000 wooden power poles, more than 20,000 underground electrical structures and nearly 10,000 miles of overhead electrical line by the end of the year is underway across the company's three-state service area.

Appalachian identified the need to improve its local infrastructure following extreme weather conditions during the last two winter seasons. The proposed Redwood Substation project will update the company's local electric delivery system with a new substation and by replacing about 4 miles of existing line. The $6 million project will provide a robust energy hub for customers from Rocky Mount to Smith Mountain Lake.

The Bland Area Improvements Project will upgrade about 20 miles of transmission line, adding 5 miles of new transmission line and building a substation to support the local distribution of power in Bland County, Va. at a cost of about $80 million.

Appalachian Power has announced an agreement for the long-term purchase of 120 megawatts (MW) of new wind generation. The 20-year purchased power agreement with a subsidiary of NextEra Energy will increase the company's total wind generation to 495 MW and is consistent with its forward-looking IRPs for its service areas in Virginia and West Virginia. The wind farm will be located in Indiana.

Appalachian Power has filed its 2016 IRP for Virginia providing a blueprint for how it will meet its forecast load obligations over the next 15 years. The plan calls for continued reliance on its existing coal, natural gas and hydro generation plants and renewable energy contracts, while increasing large-scale or "universal" solar and wind energy, and energy efficiency programs by 2030.

Appalachian Power has filed a request with the Virginia State Corporation Commission (SCC) for approval of an alternative rate that gives customers the opportunity to purchase 100 percent of their electric energy from renewable sources. The proposed rider to the company's Virginia Tariff (Rider REO) bundles the energy output of multiple current and future renewable generators to meet the total needs of participating customers. The rider will be voluntary and available for all customer classes.

Appalachian Power plans to start construction this month on a project to help with the demand for electricity in southwest Virginia. The Duffield Area Improvements Project is an estimated $14 million investment in transmission upgrades to better serve customers in Scott County, Va. It will provide about $60,000 in additional annual taxes to the county.

Appalachian Power, along with Wheeling Power, today submitted its annual Expanded Net Energy Cost (ENEC) filing to the W.Va. Public Service Commission (PSC) for reimbursement of past and ongoing costs of fuel (primarily coal) and purchased power. The $108 million filing includes approximately $76 million for past fuel costs and deferrals, as well as an $8 million adjustment to bring fuel and other charges in line with actual costs.

Appalachian Power has begun construction on a project to bolster the transmission grid in four Virginia counties. The Roanoke Area Switching Improvements Project is an estimated $30 million investment in the region with upgrades to at least 14 area substations and part of a $630 million investment in announced system upgrades of transmission infrastructure in southwestern Virginia.

APCo has announced its preferred route for the first phase of transmission improvements that will benefit electric reliability for customers in the Town of Abingdon, Va. and surrounding Washington County. The latest scam instructs customers to make an immediate payment or have their service disconnected. Customers are ordered to purchase prepaid debit cards, such as a Vanilla or Green Dot, and call a toll-free number to provide the card information.
