Kingsport Power, doing business in Tennessee as AEP Appalachian Power, has filed a request with Tennessee regulators under its existing tariff to pass through to retail customers an increase in transmission costs. The company is requesting an overall increase of about 1.5 percent in electric rates effective January 1.

ROANOKE, Va., July 12, 2011 - Appalachian Power is seeking input on a $15 million upgrade in the electric infrastructure that serves parts of Montgomery County, the Town of Blacksburg and the Town of Christiansburg. The company is in the study phase of the project which will involve construction of approximately eight miles of electric transmission line and is seeking public input into the siting process before pursuing approval to construct the new Falling Branch-Merrimac 138 kilovolt (kV) transmission line.

The Public Service Commission (PSC) of West Virginia late yesterday approved the third-year amount of a four-year phase-in of increased costs for Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power, both subsidiaries of American Electric Power. The order means Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power residential customers will see an increase in their electric bills of about 19 cents a day.

Appalachian Power, operator of the Claytor Hydroelectric Project on New River, has begun reducing outflow from its dam near Pulaski, Va. to aid the downriver search for a possible downing victim. Authorities contacted the company today and asked that it reduce flow into the river to assist search teams near McCoy Falls, about two miles downstream.

For the second time in less than a week a boater has destroyed a navigation marker in an active area of Smith Mountain Lake. Boaters should be aware that the R-16 marker will be missing during the Memorial Day holiday weekend.

RICHMOND, Va., May 2, 2011 - In 2009 the Virginia State Corporation Commission approved recovery of approximately $90 million of deferred Environmental and Reliability (E&R) costs through an E&R surcharge. The recovery period ended last year and there is now a true-up to correct for any over- or under-recovery. Today, in accordance with a February Virginia State Corporation Commission order the company asked approval to recover the approved but uncollected amount of approximately $4.5 million beginning in 2012 concurrent with other proposed rate changes. Company officials expect rates to remain unchanged for the remainder of 2011.

Recent heavy rains in Southwestern Virginia have washed debris into the reservoirs of the Smith Mountain Hydroelectric Project and Appalachian Power is reminding area property owners of a relatively new centralized process for reporting areas of debris. Residents of Smith Mountain and Leesville Lakes can call 1-800-956-4237 to report floating and dangerous debris in navigable channels.

Water levels at Appalachian Power’s two major hydroelectric generating facilities in southwestern Virginia are being lowered below normal “full pond” in anticipation of predicted heavy mid-week rains and increased inflow from tributaries. The facilities are the Smith Mountain Pumped Storage Project near Roanoke and the Claytor Hydroelectric Project on the New River in Pulaski County.

Appalachian Power and Wheeling Power, both subsidiaries of American Electric Power (AEP), today submitted their annual filing with the Public Service Commission (PSC) of West Virginia seeking an adjustment in their rates for recovery of the past and ongoing costs of fuel and purchased power and environmental compliance project expenses. If approved by the Commission, rates for residential customers will increase 8.9 percent.
