Residential Service - Smart Demand

Appalachian Power's Residential Service Smart Demand Plan is a voluntary program for Virginia customers with smart meters.

For smart meter customers in Virginia, this plan offers a time-of-use rate to allow customers greater control over their bills. Customers can save money by shifting their energy usage to more affordable, off-peak hours.

Monthly Rate
Generation Distribution Total
Basic Service Charge ($) 7.96 7.96
On-peak Demand Charge ($/kW) June-September & December-February 5.390 5.390
All metered kWh during the on-peak billing period (¢/kWh) 7.214 0 7.214
All metered kWh during the off-peak billing period (¢/kWh) 2.195 0 2.195

Each kilowatt-hour of energy consumed is subject to all applicable riders and surcharges.

With this plan, the on-peak demand charge billing period is defined as 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday during December-February and June-September. The on-peak energy billing period is defined as 7 a.m. to 8 p.m., local time, for all weekdays, Monday through Friday. The off-peak energy billing period consists of hours not defined as on-peak for all weekdays, all hours of the day on Saturdays and Sundays, and the legally observed holidays of New Year's Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.

The billing demand in kW shall be taken each month as the single highest 60-minute peak kW as registered during the month in the on-peak period by a demand meter or indicator.

This rate plan is subject to a minimum monthly charge equal to the Basic Service Charge.

Customers who choose to take service under this rate schedule must give 30 days' notice to discontinue service under this schedule. Customers who discontinue service will not be eligible to re-enroll on this rate schedule, or any other time of use rate schedule for 12 months.
