CFL and Incandescent Bulb Comparison

Compared to incandescent bulbs, ENERGY STAR® certified Compact Fluorescent Light (CFL) bulbs offer a longer life, lower operating cost, less heat gain, and ultimately lower electric bills.

Changing to CFLs
  • Saves money about $6 a year in electricity costs and can save more than $40 over its lifetime
  • Meets strict performance requirements that are tested and certified by a third party
  • Produces about 75% less heat, so it’s safer to operate and can cut energy costs associated with home cooling
  • Last up to ten times longer than incandescent bulbs
  • Use about 75% less energy than a traditional incandescent bulb

CFL Handling and Disposal

CFLs contain a small amount of mercury and need to be disposed of properly, preferably recycled. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has updated its guidance on how to properly clean up a broken CFL. Included with the guidance is a new consumer brochure with CFL recycling and cleanup tips.
