The Couch Potato's Guide to Energy Savings

Sitting on couch
Conserving energy and living a greener lifestyle sounds great, but all of that weatherizing and upgrading seems like hard work. You can rest easy because there are plenty of things you can do to lower your utility bills and live more sustainably, all from the comfort of your couch.

Watch TV more efficiently. Watching TV is a fun pastime, but televisions use a lot of energy. Fortunately, there are simple ways to reduce that energy use:

  • Turn off the TV when you are finished watching. The remote is never far away and hitting the power button is fast, free and easy.
  • Replace your older television with an ENERGY STARrated model. ENERGY STAR certified TVs use up to 30 percent less energy than standard models. You can shop online and have it delivered to your home. That way, you won't have to lift a finger, other than to pick up the remote.
  • Stream movies and shows. Streaming is fast, convenient and uses one-third the amount of energy a DVD player uses and one-tenth the amount of a cable set-top box, according to the Natural Resources Defense Council.

Alter video game habits. Video game consoles can use as much energy per year as a refrigerator if you don't turn them off when you're done playing. Many consoles come with an automatic power down feature, but you must confirm this during setup. However, shutting it off when it is not being used is still the best way to save energy.

Program your heating and cooling. A programmable thermostat is a great way to save. Once you set it, the temperature will adjust automatically, based on your schedule. If programming the thermostat sounds like too much work, don't worry! Smart thermostats, such as the Nest, program themselves. Not only that, you can change settings from your smartphone without having to get up off the couch.

Do an online energy checkup. Appalachian Power offers a free online energy checkup that you can do while relaxing at home. You can view helpful details about energy usage and cost-saving recommendations and get free stuff, too. This tool takes only minutes to complete. Once you do so, you will receive a kit with compact fluorescent bulbs, a faucet aerators and a refrigerator thermometer. Visit appalachianpower.com to participate. You’ll find the online checkup in the Learn Energy Efficiency section under the Save Money & Energy tab.

Follow these energy saving tips, then sit back and enjoy the savings.
